The national tour of the Tony Award-winning “The Outsiders” is in Providence this week, and it’s obvious why it won Best Musical in 2024. I’ve been reviewing theater for more than a decade at this point and this adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s coming of age novel is like nothing I’ve seen on stage before.

Despite being a lifelong and voracious reader, I was never assigned, and have never read, “The Outsiders,” which means I never sought out the movie either. (But if you’re even halfway like most of the people I went to middle school with, you didn’t read it either, even if it was assigned.) What this really means is I got to see this with no benchmark for comparison, and that’s a rare thing.

Tulsa, 1967, and the youths are divided between the Greasers and the Socs (say it like the first syllable of “socialite” and add an -es). The Socs hate the Greasers because they’re poor and they exist. The Greasers hate the Socs because the Socs beat the living tar out of them whenever they cross paths. Ponyboy, a book-smart Greaser who is being raised by his oldest brother after his parents died, turns 14 and takes a shine to Cherry, the prettiest Soc in town. Tensions really come to a head when Cherry’s boyfriend, a Soc ringleader who’s already shown his penchant for violence, catches Ponyboy and his best friend Johnny alone and nearly kills Ponyboy. Johnny is forced to defend his friend, and the fallout from that sets the rest of the musical in motion as the cast examines themes of home, chosen family and what it means to stand for something bigger than you are.

Ponyboy is played by Nolan White, and couldn’t be better cast. White’s voice is fantastic, but more than that, he has perfect stage presence, the kind of natural ease you see when you’re watching someone do what they were clearly made for. His chemistry with everyone on stage is unmatched, but is particularly magnetic with best friend Johnny, played by Bonale Fambrini. Ponyboy and Johnny have the sort of David and Jonathan relationship that requires good rapport, and White and Fambrini have it in spades. Fambrini also has the kind of voice that eases into the country-esque score like he was born to do it.

Other standout performances include Emma Hearn as Cherry. Hearn is blessed with a strong, crystal clear voice that is an asset to every number we get to hear her in. And Tyler Jordan Wesley is Dallas, the Greaser leader who Ponyboy can’t help but worship. Wesley is a commanding presence with excellent instincts, and another perfect casting choice.

The entire cast, really, is one knockout talent after another, and that would be enough to make this show good. The fresh-feeling choreography (Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman) elevate it even further. What makes it stellar are the brilliant staging and lighting (Brian MacDevitt) surrounding the show’s most pivotal events. Blows are flashes of light. Actors move in deliberate slow motion. There’s a fire that is so real you swear you can feel the flames. Finally, the show uses sound (Cody Spencer) in a genius manner, forcing you to experience certain moments from one person’s perspective in a way that I haven’t seen done on stage before. The final rumble is a piece of art in and of itself. No, there is no question why “The Outsiders” was nominated for, and won, so many Tony awards. Kudos to director Dayna Taymor for this stunning work.

This is the part where I could end with something like “nothing gold can stay, and neither can this tour” but that would be cliché, so instead I’ll just say that if you have any sort of time at all this week, you’ll be disappointed if you don’t head into Providence for this gem.
