The Rhode Island branch of the ACLU is calling on Mayor Allan Fung to release an un-redacted version of the State Police report detailing the mismanagement of the Cranston Police Department.
RI ACLU Executive Director Steven Brown says it was unnecessary for Fung to turn the report over to the Attorney General’s office for review prior to release. Fung said the report could contain “confidential” materials.
“By calling on the Attonrey General to examine the report to decide on what could or could not be public is not only going to mean that it could be weeks if not months before the public can view the report, but it’s still going to be completely up to the Mayor to decide whether to accept the recommendations of the Attorney General,” said Brown.
In a letter sent to Mayor Fung, State Police Colonel Steven O’Donnell says the mayor and his offices interfered in police operations and that some instances of police mismanagement could have resulted in criminal offenses.
Fung said he takes issue with parts of O’Donnell’s letter but that he will accept the premise and move forward.
