PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – State lawmakers are voting on bills that could dramatically restrict new and existing charter schools.
The House and the Senate will vote Tuesday on separate bills.
The House bill would require state education officials and the city or town council to approve any new charter school as well as the expansion of existing ones.
The bill in the Senate is similar but would also impose a moratorium on new charter schools until lawmakers revise the state’s fair funding formula.
Members of a House commission agree that the funding formula should be tweaked, but not how it should be done.
A spokeswoman for Gov. Gina Raimondo said Monday that the governor agrees that the funding formula should be revised but won’t sign any bill that would essentially end charter schools.
