The unemployment rate in Rhode Island continued its gradual fall in May, dropping to just under six percent.
The Department of Labor and Training reports the unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a point since April, with 3,400 jobs added to the economy.
The largest growth in jobs came in the service economy, particularly in the food sector where 1,300 jobs were added. The growth is being attributed to the mild May weather and the Volvo Ocean Race docking in Newport.
1,500 jobs were also added to the financial and business sectors.
The only fields to lose jobs were in the government sector and healthcare sectors, shedding a combined 500 jobs.
Overall, the jobless figure has declined two percentage points since last year and for the first time since 2007, fell below 6 percent.
