PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The state Department of Transportation says a major highway reconstruction project in Providence is behind schedule and over budget.
The Providence Journal reports that replacing the southbound bridge section of the Providence Viaduct project will now cost about $73 million. It had been estimated to cost $66.8 million.
Related work would be an additional $126 million.
Built in 1964, the viaduct is one of the most heavily traveled stretches of Route 95, with more than 222,000 daily crossings over railroad lines and Woonasquatucket River.
State officials did not provide a new completion date extended from the current expectation that workers would finish the southbound section late this year.
Work on the northbound section is scheduled to begin in 2017 and the entire project is supposed to end in 2021.
