SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) – The Massachusetts transit authority that also serves Rhode Island is seeking over $6 million from the Ocean State to cover losses on a commuter rail line.
A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority invoice obtained by WPRI says the agency collected $3.68 million in fares from providing commuter rail service to T.F. Green Airport and North Kingstown between 2010 and 2014. It spent $10 million providing that service.
Officials from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation say they’re reviewing the numbers, which they aren’t convinced are accurate.
In 2010, the MBTA agreed to run commuter trains 20 miles south of Providence, but stipulated RIDOT pay the additional costs. RIDOT can cover those by using federal highway money to pay for MBTA capital projects. The agencies agreed the funds will go toward facilities in Pawtucket and South Attleboro.
