The first boats in the Volvo Ocean Race are expected to arrive in Newport Wednesday night; setting off ten days of excitement a one of the world’s premiere sailing competitions makes its only stop in North America.
The first three teams are expected to make landfall between 7:00pm and 10:00pm. The sailing village specially constructed for the event will remain open to the public so sailors can receive a warm welcome upon their arrival.
The race kicked off in the fall of 2014 and will make a brief stop in Newport before continuing on to Europe.
The race is expected to net Newport a cool chunk of change; estimates are set to exceed the $40,000 generated by the America’s Cup Series in 2012.
