Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza joins Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien to welcome and celebrate the start of construction of a new LA Fitness on the Providence/Pawtucket line. Located at 265 Pawtucket Ave in Pawtucket, the facility will be located on a lot that has been vacant for more than 20 years.
“We’re excited about it. You talk about economic development and this is purely it. A new business is coming in, new revenue for a city and it is cleaning up a blighted neighborhood,” said Mayor Grebien.
The facility will be a 45,000 square foot health club with parking that can accommodate up to 300 vehicles. Both mayors say the project is a “major catalyst” for economic development in the area.
“This is an important corridor right here on Main Street that we have to revitalize,” said Mayor Elorza. “North Main Street has to be more than just a bus route as people see it.”
This will be the third LA Fitness facility that will be in Rhode Island. The company already has a location in Cranston and will be celebrating the opening of one in Warwick on May 16.
“We are thrilled to be coming to this part of the state, as we have seen tremendous growth in Rhode Island over the past few years,” said James O’Sullivan, Director of Development Fitness International.
The new location is expected to celebrate its grand opening in October.
