Governor Gina Raimondo says she and other state leaders are still working to craft a deal with the new ownership of the Pawtucket Red Sox to keep the team in the state. She says more patience is called for in the process.
“Let’s calm down, be rational, and see if there is a deal to be had. And if there’s not and they don’t want to operate on our terms, then fine we’ll kill the deal,” said Raimondo.
House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello said some form of incentive will be necessary to keep the team in RI.
“There are folks out there who don’t want to spend ten cents on any incentives; that’s a race to the bottom and we’re not going to do that.”
“We’re going to create a robust, vibrant community that we can all be proud of,” continued Mattiello.
The Governor and Speaker have already had meetings with the PawSox ownership, and indicated they will be meeting more in the future.
PawSox President Jim Skeffington had originally proposed a $120 million stadium deal which taxpayers would be billed for over the next 30 years; Raimondo rejected the proposal.
