In front of a picturesque lake in Roger Williams Park, State Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit announced several million dollars in grants have been awarded fifteen communities to improve water quality.
Coit says the dollars are being put to good use.
“Some communities are buying vacuum trucks to sweep the streets so all of that sediment isn’t going into the water; others are doing projects like [planting] trees in storm basins.”
Coit said having measures in place to aid in the cleaning groundwater is important for overall water quality.
The $3.3 million will be going to 23 different water restoration projects across the state.
The announcement was made to coincide with Earth Day.
