PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Providence officials say businesses, organizations and agencies have failed to pay for police details at events or work sites, shorting the city between several hundred thousand dollars to more than $1 million.
Police details are used at festivals, construction sites, bars and clubs. Businesses and organizations that require the detail are required by law to pay for it, often at an overtime rate.
The Providence Journal reports that City Council Internal Auditor Matthew M. Clarkin Jr. says the amount owed could be as high as $1.4 million. But he cautioned that was a worst-case scenario and the actual number could be half that amount.
Councilman Kevin Jackson said the city has an ordinance that calls for the suspension of services to any entity that doesn’t pay for police details.
