PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The state’s public charter schools are rallying in support of equitable funding, saying they are concerned funding will be cut as a house study commission assesses the state’s “Fair Funding Formula.”
The Rhode Island Mayoral Academies and the Rhode Island League of Charter Schools will lead Wednesday’s rally at the statehouse. They say over 700 people are expected to attend, including Lt. Gov. Daniel McKee.
The “Fair Funding Formula” legislation was passed in 2010 to ensure equitable funding based on a child’s needs rather than which public school a child attends.
The schools say they are concerned that funding could go away based on the commission’s assessment.
State Rep. Jeremiah O’Grady, a Democrat from Lincoln and Pawtucket, says the commission is investigating whether the legislation’s goals have been realized.
