PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island’s U.S. senators are spearheading the process of finding a replacement for U.S. District Judge Mary Lisi, who retires in October.
Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, both Democrats, announced Wednesday they will accept applications for the position by March 20.
The senators will make a recommendation to the president, who then names a nominee, who must then be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
The U.S. District Court for Rhode Island is the state’s federal trial court and has jurisdiction to hear both criminal and civil matters.
Lisi is planning to retire from full-time service but will continue to hear cases part time under senior judge status.
Lisi was the chief judge from 2006 to 2013. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton and received her commission in 1994.
