The Department of Labor and Training says it has reported misconduct by one or more employees to the Rhode Island State Police following an internal investigation into unemployment insurance claims.
The DLT reports it discovered accounting irregularities in its Unemployment Insurance division as a part of routine audit. The discovery led to an internal investigation which is now being turned over to State Police for further investigation.
“Even one instance of alleged fraud is one too many. Our team takes preserving the public’s integrity very seriously,” said DLT Director Scott R. Jensen.
Governro Gina Raimondo is confident the investigation will be successful.
“I have inherited a lot of messes and this is one of them but we’re on it, it’s being investigated, the person has been put on leave and we’re going to get to the bottom of it and see where it goes,” said Raimondo.
Unemployment Insurance staff processed 76,712 initial claims and DLT paid $184,240,972 in unemployment benefits.
