PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Providence officials are looking at how the city might refund some or all tax overpayments by a property owner who was mistakenly overbilled by about $24,000 for more than a decade.
The Providence Journal reports that the city collected taxes on the property owned by Donovan Wilcox from 2003 to 2013. But about nine-tenths of the property was in Pawtucket and not subject to Providence taxes.
Assessor David Quinn says the mistake was found and fixed in 2013, but no refund was offered for the overpayments in accordance with past practice. He says Wilcox did not verify the tax bill until 2013.
A call to Wilcox’s home went unanswered Wednesday morning.
Assistant City Solicitor T. Kevin Olasanoye said the city offered to refund three years of overpayments.
