In a joint presentation, Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza and US Attorney Peter Neronah stood before students of Nathaniel Greene Middle School about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
“Young kids, especially as they are becoming teenagers, they want to fit in and they want to be cool,” said Elorza.
The mayor warned the children, a mixture of seventh and eighth graders, about the risks associated with drugs. He told a personal story about a childhood friend who was an incredible athlete but got involved with drugs and went to prison and was eventually killed.
“Most kids their age are staying away, and we don’t want them to feel that peer pressure that everyone is doing this,” said Elorza.
Peter Nerohna said he hopes the children can see the potential in themselves.
“It’s really special for me to come out and talk to them about some of the challenges they’re facing, they all have such incredible talent, different talents, a wide array of talents, and if they make the right choices they can be anything,” said Nerohna.
