NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – A New York City man has been sentenced to five years in prison for setting two fires in a Rhode Island Wal-Mart.
The state attorney general’s office said Friday that 59-year-old George Reddick was sentenced in Superior Court in Newport to serve five years of a 20-year sentence, undergo counseling and stay out of the Newport Wal-Mart store for 20 years.
He pleaded no contest to first-degree arson.
Prosecutors say Reddick set two fires on Feb. 17, 2014, in the aisles at the Newport Wal-Mart to cover up his shoplifting. The store was evacuated and remained closed for several days.
Reddick’s lawyer, Noah Kilroy, said his client is remorseful and eager to serve his debt. Kilroy says Wal-Mart said it lost $4 million to $5 million in merchandise and business.
