Former West Warwick State Senator Stephen Alves pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence after he rear-ended a tractor trailer while driving on 146 South last week.
The accident took place after 11:50pm January 16 in Lincoln just before the Twin River Road exit. Officers reported Alves was traveling in the right lane when he hit the back of a tractor trailer. Alves’ car sustained heavy damage and the accident caused a third vehicle to hit the guard rail and Jersey barrier.
Alves failed a field sobriety test but refused to take a breathalyzer test when he was taken into custody.
Alves was released on $1,000 personal recognizance and is scheduled to return to court February 3.
