Governor Gina Raimondo appointed Jamia McDonald as Chief Strategy Officer for Executive Office of Health and Human Services Friday morning, tasking her with the job of turning around the state’s troubled Department of Children, Youth, and Families.
Since the summer of last year, McDonald has served former Governor Lincoln Chafee by conducting an analysis of DCYF. The findings of her report were released at the end of last year, calling the agency “fractured” and “inconsistent.”

McDonald’s new position with the Raimondo administration will be to continue working as an analyst for Health and Human Services and to lead efforts to find solutions for existing problems.
It was announced Wednesday that DCYF Director Janice DeFrances would be retiring after she learned she would not be re-appointed to the position. Kevin Aucoin is currently acting-director of the agency.
In addition to improving DCYF, McDonald’s office would also search for a new director.
