In 2024, the Olympics could be happening just a 50 minute drive from Providence.
On Thursday, members of the U.S. Olympic Committee chose Boston as the American candidate city to present to the International Olympic Committee. If the US is chosen, Boston would be the site for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games. Boston beat out Washington, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
The prospect of future Olympic games being so close to Rhode Island is an exciting one for newly-minted Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo.
“I was in Boston celebrating Governor Charlie Baker’s inauguration today,” said Raimondo in a statement, “and I look forward to working with him to make our region an attractive, economic powerhouse. If Boston is successful with its bid, our entire regional economy will benefit. This could be a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase our spectacular state, and region to the world. I look forward to learning more and collaborating with others in this effort.”
Congressman Jim Langevin, a co-chair of the Congressional Olympic and Paralympic Caucus, also expressed optimism.
