Providence City Councilman Luis Aponte has been elected Council President after a nine-to-six victory.
Despite the divided vote, Aponte said he looks forward to working with all the council members and Mayor Jorge Elorza.
Aponte has lived in Providence for over 20 years and has represented the city’s tenth ward since 1998. His lone opponent, Ward 4 Councilman Nicholas Narducci, was not able to muster enough support among the 15-member council.
Mayor Jorge Elorza briefly attended Aponte’s election ceremony.
