Providence’s Cable Car Cinema has been working with Sony pictures to get the rights to screen its controversial comedy The Interview after the studio delayed its release following a hacking scandal.
Cable Car Cinema owner Daniel Kamil said he and other independent theater owners have been negotiating with Sony for the rights to show the film.
“This movie became bigger than just a buddy comedy,” said Kamil.
Kamil said he wants to screen the film as a pushback against the hackers who tried to intimidate the studio into not distributing the film.
“I think that the threats that were leveled against the company and the theaters were outrageous.”
UPDATE: It was announced on Cable Car Cinema’s Facebook page that they have indeed secured the rights to screening the film:
“If all goes well – we will set the schedule for a Friday opening. Tickets will be available online and as we are only 100 seats I imagine selling out quickly.”
