Luis “Fat Boy” Gonzalez was sentenced to fifty years in prison with thirty to serve in the shooting death of Aynis Vargas, 12, in June, 2013.
Gonzales was one of five men charged with opening fire at a house in the Hartford Park Housing Project, injuring three women and killing Vargas. Gonzalez was the only one in the group to go to trial.
Gonzalez hung his head as prosecutor James Baum read the words of Teo Vargas, father of Anyis.
“People say that gangs are a family,” read Baum, “A family that doesn’t provide anything at all, a family that doesn’t provide anything positive, doesn’t deserve to be called a family.”
Gonzalez was acquitted of a murder charge, but was found guilty of conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon and other counts. The shooter, Branden Castro, pleaded guilty and is serving life in prison, the other three also pleaded guilty.
Gonzalez’s brother, also named Luis, is scheduled to be sentenced next month.
