Rhode Island students have shown an increase in science test scores over the past six years according to a statement by the state’s Department of Education.
According to a RIDE statement, 32% of students tested proficient or higher on the science portion of the NECAP exam compared 24% of students in 2008. Students in fourth, eighth, and eleventh grade all posted improvements, with the latter improving by 14% over the six-year span.
The new report isn’t all good news though. While the long term outlook shows improvement, science scores showed no improvement over last year and proficiency across all grades decreased by two-points.
In the statement, Education Commissioner Deborah Gist said she is concern about the slight decline from a year ago saying, “We need to be aware that the science assessments have fewer questions and require a shorter testing time than our mathematics or reading assessments.”
The report also showed low-income Hispanic students showed improvement from 2013.
