PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Ground is being broken for a new nursing education center at the site of the former South Street Power Station in Providence.
Backers hope the project being celebrated Monday will spark development on land vacant after the realignment of Interstate 195.
Outgoing Mayor Angel Taveras tells The Providence Journal he sees it as “the beginning of something” and “a catalyst for growth.” It was a key part of his economic plan.
Nursing students from Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island will use the center. Brown University administrative offices will use about half the space. The developer also will build apartments and a parking garage nearby.
The estimated $215 million project will receive a combined $54 million in state and federal tax credits, and a city property tax stabilization agreement.
