Governor-elect Gina Raimondo announced Sunday she would be nominating outgoing Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Raimondo said in a statement,“Elizabeth Roberts is the right leader for HHS because she has the key combination of management skills and compassion for the thousands of people the agency serves. We will keep Rhode Island families healthy, while also cracking down on fraud and focusing on fiscal discipline in order to cut costs.”
Roberts’ nomination to the office of Health and Human Services would be an easy fit as the Lt. Governor has a long track record of being an advocate for healthcare in the public sector. Roberts was a key player in the formation of the state’s health insurance marketplace Health Source RI, and during her time in the senate she helped reform the corporate board structure at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island to improve transparency and public accountability.
In the same statement, Roberts said she would focus on the cost structure of the state’s health care agencies to deliver the best care possible to Rhode Island.
