While many Rhode Islanders were out in the early morning hours to take of advantage of Black Friday deals, others gathered in front of the State House to collect winter coats to donate to the needy.
Hundreds of volunteers participated in the 18th annual Buy Nothing Day to give coats to the needy. Organizer Gregg Gerri said the event is more than just helping those who need to keep warm this winter.
“It’s to point out on the biggest shopping day of the year how much damage consumerism does both ecologically and to our communities in terms of justice and society and inequality,” said Gerri.
Eleven other communities around the state also participated in Buy Nothing Day.
