A ceremonial cake cutting and the raising of the Marine Corps’ flag atop the State House marked the Rhode Island celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps’ 239th anniversary.
A handful of active and veteran Marines attended the brief ceremony in the State Room, organized by Providence Rep. Scott Slater. His late father, Rep. Thomas Slater was a retired Sergeant Major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.
“This day is very special for all current and former members of the United States Marine Corps,” Slater said.
“It marks the combination of the finest tradition of one of the most respected branches of our American forces.”
“I applaud you all for your service, and for being always faithful to the Nation and what it stands for,” said Slater.
“And to all of you Marines, happy birthday, and we’re still going strong after 239 years. OO-RAH!,” said Jane Deptula, Commandant of the Marine Corps League of Rhode Island, giving the Marines’ cheer.
“The foundation of the Marine Corps is a body of traditions deeply entrenched in the soil and soul of our country,” Deptula said.
