Republican Dan Harrop got to the polls early Tuesday morning to cast a ballot for his Providence Mayoral opponent Democrat Jorge Elorza in an effort to keep Buddy Cianci out of office.
“We decided it over dinner last night, my team and myself, that it was troublesome that Buddy Cianci might return to a third corrupt administration,” said Harrop.
Harrop had said on Monday that he hoped Elorza would win the election, but at the time was undecided on who he would vote for.
The perennial Republican’s impact on the race has been an interesting one. By his own admittance his campaign was a longshot to win the race, and it seemed Harrop often acted the foil to Cianci by considering dropping out, meeting with members of the failed “Anybody But Cianci” coalition, and donating $1,000 to Elorza. Yet Harrop maintains he was not in cahoots with any other entities.
“It’s an individual standpoint, I had no coordination with Judge Elorza, I’ve only spoken to him at the debates and forums and when he called me to thank me for my donation,” said Harrop.
When asked for comment on his opponent casting a vote for him, Elorza laughed and said, “there has been nothing usual about this race.”
Independent Buddy Cianci agreed the election has been bizarre, but said he believes the two worked together.
“The only reason he was in there was to take up debate from me, he had no intention of completing this race,” said Cianci.
Harrop said he is confident that Elorza will win the race.
