One of the costliest races for governor comes down to the final full day of campaigning, and the candidates are back to so-called ‘retail’ politicking… shaking hands with voters and asking for votes.
Allan Fung’s campaign staged a rally in his Cranston headquarters, headlined by Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The head of the Republican Governor’ Association began his day on the stump in Rhode Island, in his third appearance here in three weeks for Fung.
“I’m going to Michigan right after this, then I’ll come back to New Hampshire, then Connecticut and I’ll finish the night in Maine,” Christie said of his busy schedule on the final full day of the campaign. He said these are all states “in play”, where Republicans believe they can gain the governor’s offices.
“Absolutely, absolutely,” Christie said. “We’re going to have a good night tomorrow night, it’ll be a great night in Rhode Island.”
Fung’s opponent, Gina Raimondo began her day campaigning in an East Providence senior citizens high-rise, joined by fellow Democratic candidates Senator Jack Reed, and Seth Magaziner, the Democrat who hopes to succeed Raimondo in the General Treasurer’s office.
“I’m just here today to ask you to get out to vote tomorrow, because there’s so much at stake in this election. We can’t keep going the way we’re going,” Raimondo said to a room full of seniors, many of whom will vote Tuesday in the same common room in the Rumford Towers complex. Raimondo also had a busy final day of campaigning ahead.
“A couple more senior centers, some small businesses, a manufacturing tour. The message is, ‘get out to vote’,” she said, adding that people she’s talked with are supportive.
“Yeah, they’re ready for change, they’re ready for jobs, so my message to them is, ‘get out and vote tomorrow’.”
“I’m very optimistic about tomorrow, we’re feeling great,” she said.
Three other candidates running for governor include: Moderate Party candidate Robert Healey and independents Kate Fletcher and Leon Kayarian.
