President Barack Obama fit in a campaign stop with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo after his speech on the economy and women at Rhode Island College.
The two stopped at Gregg’s Restaurant on the Providence-Pawtucket border to chat with diners Friday.
Obama ordered a cheeseburger and Raimondo ordered a turkey club. He also ordered a “death by chocolate” layer cake for the trip home on Air Force One, and left a $20 tip.
“It was a little disruptive, but in a good way and it was exciting and everybody was very professional and the time he took with everybody was thrilling for a lot of [people],” said Gregg’s co-owner Bob Bacon.
Before leaving the counter to shake hands in the dining room, Obama reminded everyone to vote and said Raimondo would make a great governor.
Owner Robert Bacon says the restaurant had about a half-hour’s notice the president was coming in. The White House didn’t announce the stop.
Raimondo is in a tight race with Republican Allan Fung.
