Members of the Providence Newspaper Guild and other unions hit the streets again to protest he management of the Providence Journal.
“We’re all out here for each other to try and stand up against this corporate-wide cutting back of what we think is quality in the paper; consolidating of services and out-of-state locations that we think has to be rolled back,” said Guild President John Hill.
The protest is a follow-up to last month’s gathering which took issue with the new owner Gatehouse Media firing employees and moving vital functions of the paper such as the copy editing and advertising to an office in Texas.
“When they came in they spoke of lengthening the runway and respecting the iconic brand of the Journal and the institution itself; they laid off 22 people,” said Hill.
Hill is concerned Gatehouse Media is driven by a numbers strategy rather a strategy of quality reporting.
Gatehouse purchased the Journal on July 22 for $46 million.
