The Rhode Island State Police announced that a piece of skull was found in West Warwick Sunday afternoon.
RISP Major Kevin O’Brien said a man was walking through the woods when he came across what turned out to be the top of a human skull. The man took it home and turned it over to the State Police.
“They turned it over to the detectives and the members of the criminal identification unit, and the following morning they brought that up to the Medical Examiner’s office and the initial report was that it was in fact a human skull,” said O’Brien.
Experts said the skull fragment had been exposed to the elements for a long period of time, however an approximate time could not be immediately determined. Investigators are waiting for a report from the Medical Examiner’s office before they begin a more in-depth investigation.
O’Brien said in the interim detectives will be searching the area for additional evidence such as other bones and looking through records of missing person’s in the area.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call the State Police.
