The Rhode Island Congressional delegation gathered at a private event Thursday evening to put their support behind Democrat Jorge Elorza for Mayor of Providence.
“I think it’s important we move this city forward I think there’s been a lot of conversation about the work of my predecessor I think people are aware of what he did as mayor, and I think people understand that we have to move forward; we can’t go back,” said Congressman David Ciccilline.
Ciccilline said he has a stake in this election because he lives in Providence and cares about the city.
”I see in him this incredible passion for the city a real understand of what working Providence residents are struggling with,” continued Ciccilline.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said he supports Elorza because he is concerned about the reputation the Capital City would have under a third Cianci administration.
“What matters is that we’re struggling to rebuild this economy, and how many new private investors do you expect to come into a city that has that kind of leadership?” asked Whitehouse.
Elorza said the state’s Democrats are united behind a common vision for the city.
“We need honest leadership at City Hall; that’s our common vision, we’re going to bring people in from the city, the state and from everywhere as one Providence because we have to work together and together we’re going to get it done,” said Elorza.
