Providence Police have charged a 36-year veteran of the force with stealing evidence.
They say 60-year-old Officer Michael McCarthy stole jewelry from an evidence safe.
Police launched an investigation when a sergeant in charge of the Property and Evidence Room noticed missing items. The investigation revealed McCarthy was responsible for a missing item.
He has been charged with one count of fraudulent conversion, a felony, and has been suspended from the force.
Police are now investigating more missing items they say might be connected to McCarthy as well.
