Jorge Elorza acknowledged Thursday during a press conference that he had once shoplifted as teenager.
“I made a mistake as a teenager, I wanted everyone to know, I wanted to be upfront, I wanted to be honest, and I took responsibility for it. I’ve never had a problem again so I wanted to put that out there so voters heard directly from me,” said Elorza.
According to Elorza, he stole a shirt from a department store in order to impress his friends. Elorza disclosed his now expunged arrest record via direct mail to Providence voters. He said the experience changed his life.
“The most disappointing part for myself was when my mother found out and she cried, and that told me I could never do something like that again. I was just very disappointed with myself.”
Elorza faces Michael Solomon in a Democratic primary next month.
