NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) – The funeral for former U.S. Rep. Fernand St Germain has been set for next week.
WJAR-TV reports that the congressman will be remembered at a service Aug. 28 at St. Mary’s Church in Newport.
St Germain represented Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District for 28 years in the House. The Democrat rose to become chairman of the House Banking Committee before losing his seat in 1988 to Republican Ron Machtley.
St Germain was first elected in 1960 and was close with President John F. Kennedy. He died Saturday at his home in Newport at age 86.
