Local leaders gathered at the Port of Providence today for a showcase designed to promote the services available at Rhode Island's ports. The centerpiece of the tour was a new crane, which expands the port's capabilities.
"It's more than just a transportation system," said U.S. Maritime Administration Acting Administrator Paul “Chip” Jaenichen. "We are working to advance awareness of the importance of the entire maritime industry to ensure both a strong future for the country, but also for our economic prosperity and our national security."
The presentation included a panel discussion about port capabilities, freight flows in the region, and details on how state and federal investments are aiming to improve the marine transportation system in Rhode Island.
Last December, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse held a port policy summit with the Rhode Island's Congressional delegation, Governor Lincoln Chafee, and U.S. Maritime Administration to discuss opportunities to support Rhode Island’s major ports.
Local leaders said the added capabilities of Providence's and Quonset's ports can bring new jobs to the state.
