Peter Hanney, spokesman for Save the Bay, snapped of photo of what he said looked and smelled like raw sewerage flowing down Ernest Street off Allens Avenue in Providence Monday afternoon.
According to the Narragansett Bay Commission, it was indeed raw, untreated sewerage from the Fields Point wastewater treatment facility, which serves Providence, North Providence and parts of Lincoln.
According to Jamie Samons, a spokeswoman for NBC, the pumping station on Ernest Street lost power briefly, and when power was restored, it caused a surge that sent the sewerage into the streets.
Samons says the volume of the leak was less than 50 gallons, something NBC considers a “minimal spill.”
Save the Bay neighbors NBC, and Hanney told WPRO the spill was very atypical.
“They’re great neighbors,” said Hanney, who said Save the Bay is very good about making sure sewerage does not leak into the Bay.
This story has been edited to correct the NBC spokeswoman’s name to Jamie Samons.
