Meals on Wheels Rhode Island reached a milestone on Wednesday morning when they delivered their 17 millionth meal. The receiver of the meal was 80-year-old Providence resident Clara Ramos who spent years feeding others while working in a soup kitchen for her church.
“So it just seemed like such a nice closing the circle to now be providing meals for her after she did for so many people for so many years,” said Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Rhode Island Heather Amaral.
Meals on Wheels has been delivering lunch to Ramos since 2007 when she became ill and wasn’t able to cook for herself anymore. Ramos says she feels honored to be given the 17 millionth meal.
“I’m just over whelmed. I can’t believe it, you know I don’t think I’m special to anyone else,” said Ramos.
Ramos’ Pastor at Providence Assembly of God says the world would be a better place if there were more people like her in it.
“Clara is one of the most loving people I know. In fact, when I come to see her from time to time she’s always trying to do something for me, even though I might be coming here to try to do something for her. She’s always had a heart to want to do something for somebody else,” said Pastor Charles Berkley.
Meals on Wheels Rhode Island delivers meals to approximately 1,450 people everyday.
