A 21-year-old Massachusetts man has died after he was punched in the head outside a Providence nightclub Friday.
Police found the man unconscious on the ground with what Providence Police Commander Thomas Oates described as “pretty serious head injuries.”
The victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he later died on Saturday afternoon.
The Providence Journal is identifying the victim as Charles Bettencourt of New Bedford.
Oates said he does not believe the man who hit Bettencourt knew him beforehand. He believes the victim was in a verbal confrontation with several people, one of whom punched him in the head.
An autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death. Police say they are treating the death as a homicide.
