Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz joined the PawSox for their home opener on Thursday night.
Ortiz missed most of the 2012 baseball season after injuring his right Achilles’ while running bases last July. He told reporters before the game that his foot felt good and he was ready to play.
“When it comes down to hitting, I haven’t played in a while so you just got to go back to that zone,” said Ortiz.
Ortiz missed regular spring training but played a simulated game and an extended spring training game in Florida earlier this week.
“I want to test myself, you know. I want to make sure that I’m not running up there afraid or concerned about getting injured caused that’s when things get worse,” said Ortiz after batting practice.
Pawtucket Red Sox General Manager Gary DiSarcina says Ortiz is like a mentor to the other players.
“It’s great to know that his experience is there. You’ve got Hazelbaker and Brentz and these younger guys that can sit next to him and listen to him. Listen to him talk about approach and what he would look for in certain situations… I mean that’s invaluable for these guys,” said DiSarcina.
Ortiz went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI, a run scored and a strikeout. PawSox beat the Red Wings 5-4.
