Earlier this week, the University of Rhode Island sent out an alert asking for information on a man that was “acting suspiciously” in their Kingston campus library the day after the campus went into lockdown after reports of a gunman on campus.
Shortly after the alert was issued, the man voluntary went to campus police, and identified himself as the man pictured in surveillance camera photos. The man told police his girlfriend saw his picture on the URI website, and he came to the Kingston campus police station to clear up the matter.
Witnesses had reported hearing the man crying on a cell phone in the library Friday evening. The man apologized to police for causing any concern. He told police he is a writer and went to the library Friday to work on a new book. He is not a URI student.
According to a statement from URI, police do not believe he had any connection to the Chafee Social Science Center incident on Thursday, April 4, and do not believe he is a threat to himself or others.
No criminal charges are being filed against him.
