Cumberland Police have identified the two people involved in a homicide-suicide that happened on Easter Sunday.
Cumberland Police Chief John Desmarais told WPRO that 70-year-old Maria Bouvier and her 73-year-old husband, Roland Bouvier were found dead in their bedroom Sunday evening. The woman had been shot twice in the torso and the man had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police also found a note they believe was written by Roland.
Desmarias said the couple were "very devoted to each other," and have been married for more than 40 years. He said family members indicated that the pair had health issues that detracted from their quality of life and police believe it was a consensual act.
Desmarais said Tuesday that police will view it as a homicide-suicide.
The couple’s 49-year-old daughter and her three daughters ages 20, 15 and 14 were inside the home at the time of the shooting. They were ones who reported the gun shots to the police.
“It’s a tragic event,” Desmarais said Monday. “Our hearts really go out to the family members that are having to go through this. To hear the gunshots to rush into the bedroom and see the bodies, it makes it even more difficult on Easter Sunday because each Easter from here on in is going to bring back horrible memories.”
"Now the family is left to pick up the pieces," Desmarais added Tuesday.
