PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The owner of Rhode Island's tallest building wants to convert it from office space into around 290 apartments, and a spokesman says the company needs historic tax credits to do it.
High Rock Development owns the building, known locally as the Superman building. It was built in 1928 and is about to become vacant.
High Rock spokesman Bill Fischer says the company believes the highest and best use of the building is to convert it to residential rental space. He says historic tax credits will be required, although he said they are doing a report to come up with a specific number of how much they will need.
The state's historic tax credit program ended in 2008, and some lawmakers are pushing to revive it.
