A list of this weekend’s hottest events from the Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade, to documentaries and Wrestlemania.
ST. PATTY’S PARADE: The 57th Annual Newport St. Patrick Day Parade will be held Saturday, rain or shine. The parade begins at 11 a.m. and runs from Newport City hall to Carroll Ave at St. Augustin’s Church. This year’s parade will include seven pipe bands, nine marching bands, four fife and drum corps, three clown units and eight reenactment troupes. More information on the parade can be found here.
DOCUMENTARY: “WaterFire: Art & Soul of City” will premiere at the Odeum Theatre on Main Street in East Greenwich Saturday at 8 p.m. The film, a documentary on the much-loved WaterFire installation and events, was produced by two-time Emmy winner Joe Rocco and WaterFire creator Barnaby Evans. THEATRE: A fire couldn’t stop Trinity Repertory from opening its latest play, a world premiere of Jackie
Sibblies Drury’s “Social Creatures.” (At right: D’Arcy Dersham and Alex Platt in “Social Creatures.” Credit: Mark Turek) The play was written specifically for Trinity, and follows seven survivors of the apocalypse. Spoiler alert: I believe there are zombies involved. And blood. Lots of blood. For tickets and information on the “horrifying, hilarious and incredibly, eerily true” play, click here.
The Gamm Theatre is also opening a new play, “The Real Thing” by Tom Stoppard. Stoppard’s other works include “Rosencratz and Guildenstern are Dead” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll.” “The Real Thing” tackles the issues of love and commitment and asks, “How do you know when it’s the real thing?” Click here for more information and tickets.
BALLET: The Joffrey Ballet is in town performing “The Rite of Spring.” Forty-six of the company’s elegant dancers will perform the ballet that premiered in Paris in 1913. Ticket prices range from $20-$85, More information here.
WWE RAW: If you’re a wrestling fan, don’t miss WWE RAW Road to Wrestlemania at the Dunkin Donuts Center Saturday. The Road to Wrestlemania will feature four competitors: John Cena, CM Punk, Alberto Del Rio and Brock Lesnar. Tickets range from $25-$110; VIP passes available. Purchase tickets here.
