On a day dedicated to love and romance, around 150 Brown students marched through the streets and snow to the State House to rally for gay marriage.
“It’s great to see the passion on campus about this issue. We’ve got people from all different backgrounds coming together. It’s really great,” says Taylor Daily, a senior at Brown and one of the organizers of the rally.
The students held signs, chanted and wore pink and red heart stickers to show their support for the cause.
“Poll after poll has shown that the majority of Rhode Islanders support marriage equality. Now what we need to do is pressure those senators to actually act on that and get past any personal prejudices they might have and act on behalf of their constituents, many of whom are here, and pass marriage equality,” says Gabriel Schwartz, who runs the Queer Activism Committee at Brown University.
Daily says there’s a reason why they chose to do the rally on Valentine’s Day.
“We thought that since today is a day when we celebrate love that we should really celebrate all love and we could really show that all love is equal and that’s really our goal for today,” says Daily.
Rhode Island is currently the only New England state that hasn’t legalized gay marriage.
