Over the weekend a familiar face got hitched in our capital city. Michelle Kwan, 32 who skated her way into our hearts during various Olympic winter games and world figure skating championships, married a grandson of the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell at the First Unitarian Church in Providence on Saturday. Clay Pell, 31 – a JAG and Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard – was dressed in full uniform for the ceremony. Kwan, who cried while walking down the aisle with her father, Danny Kwan, wore an ivory Vera Wang gown. Click here to see the wedding photo.
Before 240 family and friends, including Governor Chafee and his wife Stephanie, Olympic champions Brian Boitano, Dick Button and Dorothy Hamill, the two shared their self-written vows. As Kwan, now a senior advisor for public diplomacy and public affairs, told PEOPLE in September following their engagement, “I never was one who believed in love at first sight, but I have to admit it happened for us. I felt there was a magnetic connection between us. I thought he was the one from the beginning.”
At the wedding, “You could feel the love Michelle and Clay have for each other,” a guest said. “They are truly a perfect match.” The couple enjoyed their wedding reception at The Hope Club in Providence.
