Former Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo was sworn in as U.S. Commerce Secretary Wednesday evening in a brief ceremony at the White House, one day after her confirmation by the Senate, and submitting her resignation as governor.
Vice President Kamala Harris administered the oath of office as Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) held a bible.
“A committed public servant, @SecRaimondo will help strengthen our economy, create jobs, and ensure American businesses and workers thrive again,” Harris said in a Tweet, adding, “Congratulations, Secretary”.
According to a White House pool report, Raimondo’s swearing-in was witnessed by her immediate family, husband Andy Moffit, daughter Ceci and son Tommy, and by Thomas Donilon, a fellow Rhode Islander and former National Security Advisor to President Barack Obama.
Raimondo’s confirmation on a 84-15 Senate vote and subsequent resignation as governor Tuesday cleared the way for the transition of former Lieutenant Governor Dan McKee to the governor’s office.
