Providence Police were investigating the shooting death of one man and wounding of another as they sat in a car in broad daylight late Friday morning.
“It looks like a targeted shooting,” said Providence Police Major David Lapatin at the scene in the Olneyville section of the city.
“Two men were sitting in a vehicle at Kossuth and Putnam Street, one or more people came up upon them with a gun, opened fire. We have one person dead, one person at Rhode Island Hospital in surgery,” said Lapatin, commander of the Investigative Division.
Numerous officers spread out near the crime scene, which was ringed by police tape. Police examined the Toyota sedan the two victims were sitting in when they were shot. Neighbors were on edge.
“Last year, we had two murders within a block of my house,” said Timothy Campbell, who heard the gunfire from his home a few blocks away.
“It’s just going downhill too quick,” Campbell said.
Police did not immediately identify the victims.
